Wiley

This is Wiley a Hob, he came into the rescue center with his brother and two sisters in December 2006 aged 8 weeks old, a very late litter they were in very poor condition had not been fed well at all, but the most amazing thing is they did not bite which is the one thing we would have expected, there parent's had wonderful temperament's, but that would not be enough to stop them biting considering there condition, the parent's stayed with our friends, that run Ferret Friends in Cambridge, and the three babies were sent down to us.

The picture of Wiley above, taken on January 4th 2007 aged 11 weeks, is very cute, but if you could see him in the flesh from the side you would think he was cute but strange, a member that was visiting decided to sit him down and have a good look to see if she could find a reason for his strange good looks, she found one eye was just a bit lower then the other, but the main reason was he has an overshot jaw, he also has a problem with his back legs, they seem to be too close together so he walks in a strange way, but has no pain, whether his problems improve as he grows remains to be seen, we don't like re-homing ferrets with health problems to just anyone so he has gone to one of our members, you will be able to see him at the shows in 2007.

Wiley update 05-02-07

We found out some more information on the litter that Wiley came from, apparently there were 12 kits in the litter but only four survived, we don't know the circumstances of there death, but if we had to guess lack of food could be the reason, looking at Wiley and his siblings condition.

Wiley still looks the same but he has got a lot bigger and is now almost the same size as Dreamer our 7 month old Jill, who is 100% pure home grown, in the picture below we have Evil on the left a full sized Hob, Dreamer on the right a full sized Jill and Wiley in the middle, this could be his full size as a Hob, especially as we now know he is older then we thought, his back legs are much stronger with the exercise he gets but he still doesn't walk like a normal ferret but hopefully he will continue to improve.

Wiley was getting on well with the 6 ferrets in his group but all of a sudden he was getting on a little too well with the ladies, he had matured, so I think the owner was stretching the truth with the age of the kits, obviously they are older then he said because they all came into season, although Wiley's sister could still pass as a 8 week old kit because of her size, we immediately spit the ferrets by blocking the stairs, we didn't want babies, did we, so Wiley was in the cage on the bottom with John and Evil both Hobs while Polo got the girls Dreamer, Honey and Sasha, lucky boy, we put him in with the girls because he is so close to his sister Honey, they were in the cage on top, Wiley was castrated and only allowed to come out with the boys, the first night I unblocked the stairs all 7 ferrets slept in one bed out of the 4 beds on offer, I think they were very happy to be back together again.

You can really see the size difference between Wiley's head and the two boy's Evil and Polo the Albino.
